Description

The first mission in San Antonio was established in 1718 and it wasn’t long until there were five missions along the San Antonio River. Four of these fall within the boundaries of the National Historic Park today. Grab a map at the visitor center, after watching Gente de Razon, an award-winning film about the natives of south Texas, and then set out to the missions proper.

The Alamo is one of these five missions, but not included within the National Historic Park. The four that are within park boundaries are rather less famous, but no less historic. They are the grand Mission San Jose, the proudly unrestored (and still intact) Mission Concepcion, the more worn Mission San Capistrano, and Mission Espada and its famous irrigation system.
