401 Trail

Basics
Location:
Crested Butte
Length:
25 miles
Aerobic Difficulty:
Moderate
Elevation Change:
3000 feet
Season:
July-September

Description

The 401 Trail is one of the best rides for a range ability levels in the Crested Butte area. The 401 Trail cuts through gorgeous alpine meadows, aspen groves and over several streams. Views on the 401 Trail are unparalleled, with impressive vistas of the Maroon Bells and the Elk Mountains.

The 401 Trail is accessed first by riding up a dirt roadway, which leads to Schofield Pass and the trailhead for the 401. The remainder of climbing and descent is on singletrack, with a couple of short downhills and climbs back uphill before the final long and beautiful downhill back to the bottom. The uphill gives a good workout but is never too steep to ride and the downhill is not too technical that an advanced beginner couldn’t hack it.

The elevation and length are the biggest factors on the 401 trail , and riders should judge their ability and fitness levels accordingly.
