Description

The George Washington Memorial Parkway is laden with wildlife preserves, memorials, famous homesteads, and the history of our nation. It winds its way along a tree-lined path with beauty at every bend. Bikers and joggers run alongside the road on a path paved for their pleasures. And, sweeping views of the Potomac River mingle with thickets of trees, gardens and parklands preserved for all time.

The Parkway begins at Exit 43 off of the Capital Beltway (I-495) and runs south to its terminus at Mount Vernon, home of our First President.

This is a path for every season. The aroma of the cherry blossoms beckons bikers out in the spring. Summer breezes from the river and the warble of the birds lull sunbathers into a sweet reverie. In fall, a spectrum of color dances in the wind as the sun twinkles through the leaves . And in winter, powder puffs of snow and trees made of ice crystal bedazzle the landmarks of history.

Those who enjoy being outdoors have ample opportunity to do so. There are plenty of parks along the way to play in addition to the miles of paved paths for outdoor pleasures. Nature freaks will enjoy the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve where lots of birds hang out. And, history buffs can revel in the huge number of attractions available en route including Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, and the war memorials.
