Keep Your Cool When It Gets Hot in San Antonio, Texas

Description

San Antonio, Texas, sits in a humid subtropical climate zone. Which means, in a nut shell, that there’s not much snow and it can getting pretty darn hot here during the summer. So while some might be inclined to give the city a wide berth between say, June and September, it doesn’t have to be that way. Sure, you might want to save your long strolls down River Walk for the morning or evening, but there are other ways to chill even on a record-breaking day in August.

Since San Antonio is a solid 2.5 hours from beaches on the Gulf Coast, the next best way to get wet is Splashtown, a 20-acre waterpark in San Antonio. Optionally, drive 40 minutes to New Braunfels for a day on the water coasters at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort or continue on to Canyon Lake, a short drive northwest of New Braunfels, for access to its swimming beaches as well as the Guadalupe River, a popular tubing run. For a budget friendly alternative close to home, enjoy a dip in one of the city’s free outdoor pools; just be prepared to share pool space for the surprisingly short public pool season.

When you’re ready for a break from slides and splashing, the next best thing to do is seek out climate-control. Happily, San Antonio, Texas, is home to a long list of museums - the perfect cultural antidote to sweltering heat. For a bit of history, science and kid-friendly entertainment, try the Witte Museum in Brackenridge Park. Should you prefer art, options include the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum (modern art), the Museo Alamedo (with a Latino focus) and the San Antonio Museum of Art, which takes in a growing collection of art and artifacts from around the globe. Getting a little hot under the collar? Catch a shootout at the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum and then detour through the associated Texas Ranger Museum. If this doesn’t help you cool off it’s a sure bet a cold beverage at the saloon will do the trick.
