Description
Located just 5 miles east of downtown New Orleans, St. BernardParish is a delightful escape from the city. The San Bernardo ScenicByway (La. Hwy. 46) traverses this area, which is rich in history andcultural diversity. St. Bernard was founded in 1780 by colonists fromthe Canary Islands, known as "Islenos" (Island people). Theirdescendants abound in the parish today. Visitors can experience theirarchaic Spanish language which was established in Louisiana during theColonial Period at the Islenos Museum.
Meandering along the lower section of La. 46, visitors will come to thefishing villages of Yscloskey and Delacroix Island, where charterfishing and the seafood industry are still the community's mainbusiness. For those interested in the history of war, an awesome sightis in Chalmette National Historic Park. The Battle of New Orleans (Warof 1812) was a military engagement that determined the destiny of theU.S. In addition to history, the visitors will also find wonderfulrestaurants, friendly people, great fishing and other activities at St. Bernard Parish.
