Description

The Vernon Unit has limited opportunities for boating recreation. Canoe and kayak users can enjoy Fullerton Lake, Blue Hole, Little Cypress, or Government Pond. An excellent addition to camping at Fullerton Lake would be a leisure canoe trip across the lake enjoying the various wildlife visitors along the way.

Visitors to the Vernon Unit of the Calcasieu Ranger District can enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities. The horse enthusiast can ride on any of 5 trails offered. The motorcycle enthusiast can enjoy the Enduro Multiple-Use Trail, hikers and bikers can enjoy 5 separate trails.

Boating on Blue Hole, Government Pond, Fullerton Lake, and Cypress Pond are limited to non-motorized boating. Fullerton Lake has a canoe launch ramp available at the day-use area within the recreation complex. Fishing from all four lakes and ponds can be productive but users should have the legal licensing requirements with the proper equipment to meet state regulations.

Often, during migrating season these lakes have some pretty exotic visitors. Various species of ducks and other waterfowl, along with other migratory species that are headed back to or from South America. Bird watchers and photographers alike have excellent opportunities, especially from a canoe, to view and photograph some bird species that might not be normally viewed because of the open space across the water.

Safety should be exercised while recreating near or on the water. Life jackets, proper equipment, correct use of equipment, and common sense should be used. Weather is always a factor here in Louisiana. Check on the weather before and during your trip and caution should be taken when electrical storms are occurring. If you should be out when thunder is heard, get off the water and seek shelter. Water bodies are the wrong place to be during a thunderstorm.
