Abilene, Texas Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Visit Abilene, the defining city of West Texas, where the frontier spirit is still applied to discovery, development and creativity. Spend a few days in Abilene, the home of 120,000 friendly people. Relax, explore and enjoy the mix of western heritage, contemporary culture and traditional values.

There’s no better place to experience that western heritage and history than Frontier Texas! where visitors can use modern technologies to experience the historical significance of Abilene from 1780 to 1880. Life-sized holographic figures greet visitors and explain the perils and everyday life of living on the Texas frontier. Buffalo hunters, Comanche warriors, explorers and other people of the day inform and entertain in the Frontier Texas! theatre called the Century of Adventure. Wolf attacks, buffalo stampedes, card game and saloon shootouts await, so bring the family and saddle up for a blast to the past.

If the Old West doesn’t tickle your fancy you can spend a fun-filled day at Abilene’s #1 attraction, the Abilene Zoo. Here you’ll meet over 500 animals including jaguars, black rhinos, bison, maned wolves, giraffes, black bears, lions, monkeys, and more. When you get tired of the furry ones you can take a walk on the Wetlands Boardwalk or check out the Creepy Crawly Center where visitors can see nearly 50 exhibits of rare reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Regardless of whether your favorite animal is furry, slimy or scaly, you and your family will be sure to have a great day at the Abilene Zoo!

Located about 180 miles due west of Dallas/Fort Worth, Abilene is in West Central Texas, close to the geographical center of the state. It's easily accessible by four major highways: I-20, Highway 84 East/West, and Highways 83 and 277 North/South.
