Abilene is a place of quiet, but unique culture. For all that this is not a large city, you'll find attractions you're unlikely to find anywhere else. Frontier Texas celebrates the frontier with modern multimedia, while the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature celebrates the picture book. There is also a strong historical military presence, as evidenced by the presence of Dyess Air Force Base. Buffalo Gap Historic Village, a living history site, also celebrates Abilene's long history.
